Week 9 at Chautauqua Institution | August 18-25, 2019

Wynton Marsalis returns to Chautauqua to open and close a week on “Exploring Race and Culture in America with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center.” Through a Monday morning lecture, performances with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra throughout the week — including the second-ever performance of The Ever Fonky Lowdown — and a Friday morning Amphitheater conversation, Marsalis will convey his hopes, concerns, and insights about contemporary culture and society through a historically informed lens.  The Interfaith Lecture Theme for the week is:  Exploring Race, Religion and Culture.  It has been observed that racism is one of the most disturbing of historical cultural phenomena – speciously scientific, privileging some and denying value to segments of the world’s populations.  This week will explore how racism became enculturated, and will look for ethical realities, understanding ad cultural healing.

An additional performance for the week will be the Wednesday night appearance of The Beach Boys.  Travel back to the 60’s and enjoy a step back to our youth.  The Saturday night Grand Finale Concert will include performances by Pat Benetar, Neil Gerardo and Melissa Ethereridge.

The very special week includes transportation to Chautauqua, accommodations in Bellinger Hall Dormitories, with shared twin rooms and baths, gate pass with tickets for all activities including daily lectures & evening entertainment, and breakfast and dinner each day.  The cost is $1050 per person.
